The Lincoln Community School is a
private, non-for-profit, college preparatory, American International
School that offers educational programs from pre-school (age 3)
through grade 12. The School, established in 1968, is located in a
residential area of Accra. The school year comprises 4 quarters
extending from August 16 to October 8, October 11 to December 17,
January 10 to March 18, and March 29 to June 9. Organization:
The School is governed by a 9-member Board of Directors. Members of
the Lincoln Community School’s Parent Association elect 6 directors
for a two-year term and three directors are appointed by the U.S.
Ambassador and ratified by the Parent Association.
Curriculum: The School is international and multicultural
with an emphasis on inquiry and problem solving. It is designed to
be appropriately challenging, and to allow a smooth transition into
other international schools. The three levels of the International
Baccalaureate Programs guide the curriculum: the Primary Years
Program (Preschool – grade 5), the Middle Years Program (grade 6-10)
and the IB Diploma Program (grades 11-12). Special classes in art,
music, physical education, theater, technology and French are
offered. English for Speakers of Other Languages and Learning
Support Services are available, but families who may need these
programs are advised to consult with the Registrar about possible
limitations. Lincoln Community School is authorized by the
International Baccalaureate Organization, is accredited by the
Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of
both the Council of International Schools and the Association of
International Schools in Africa.
Faculty: In the 2004-2005 school year, there are 66
international educators from 12 countries; many with advanced
degrees and all qualified to teach in their assigned subject areas.
Classes are normally limited to 20 students. There are also teaching
assistants in all junior school grade levels and in several senior
school subject areas.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year,
enrollment was 512 students from 43 different countries.
Facilities: The School is located in the cosmopolitan West
African city of Accra with a population of approximately 3.5
million. Ghana has a democratically elected government, a growing
economy, and enjoys relative safety and stability. There are many
recreational and travel opportunities as well as a rich culture to
explore. Ghanaian people are renowned for being open, friendly and
hospitable. School facilities are air conditioned with 51 classrooms
including 3 art rooms, 2 science labs, 3 technology labs, 2 music
rooms, a visual and performing arts center, junior and senior school
libraries, an early childhood center, a world language center and
office space for guidance and administration. Sports facilities
include a multi-purpose hall, playground, a multi-purpose court, a
climbing wall, 2 fields and a semi-Olympic swimming pool, a large
gymnasium, a stage, and dressing room facilities. Playground space
includes 2 grassy playing fields with recreational apparatus and a
large playground with a multi-purpose court.
Finances: In the 2004-2005 school year, the annual tuition
rates are: Pre-School: $2,500; PK: $5,500; Kdg.-grade 8: $9,000;
grades 9-10: $10,150; and grade 11-12: $10,250. There is a one-time
non-refundable registration fee of $5,000 for pre-school through
grade 12. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
