International School of Addis Ababa
The International Community School of Addis Ababa (ICSAA) is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1966. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending approximately from the end of August to early June.

Organization: The School is governed by a 9-member Board of Governors, 8 of whom are elected for 2-year terms by the International Community School Association, the sponsor of the School. The U.S. Embassy appoints 1 member. Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School and professional members of the staff.

Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. college-preparatory public schools with the addition of the International Baccalaureate program. Instruction is in English. French and Spanish are taught as foreign languages. Art, music, and physical education are offered at all grade levels. English-as-a-Second-Language and computer sciences are offered in grades 1-8. ICSAA is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The accreditation is valid until December 01, 2006.

Faculty: In the 2004-2005 school year, there are 38 full-time and 6 part-time faculty members.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year, enrollment was 361.

Facilities: The School is located on a 15-acre tract. There are classrooms with adjoining play areas, a separate library building (including a new elementary library), an administrative office area, new performing arts building, a basketball court, tennis courts, and soccer and baseball fields. The library has over 12,500 volumes. A large multi-purpose building houses a gymnasium, five separate teaching stations, and an art room. A separate building houses the kindergarten and pre-kindergarten sections.

Finances: In the 2004-2005 school year, about 98% of the School’s income derives from tuition. The annual rates are as follows: PK: $4,645; Kdg.-grade 5: $11,210; grades 6-8: $12,655; and grades 9-12: $13,015. A tuition discount policy gives a 5% discount for a third child, 10% for a fourth and 15% for a fifth. There is a capital levy fee of $1,800 for new students and $600 for returning students. The enrollment fee for all students is $315. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
