The International School of
Beijing (ISB) is an English-language day school offering an
international curriculum for foreign children in China. ISB consists
of four schools in one: the lower elementary school (PK 3-4 year
olds) – grade 2, upper elementary school (grades 3-5), middle school
(grades 6-8), and high school (grades 9-12), with a principal for
each division. The school year extends from August to mid-June. ISB
has its roots as a diplomatic school, having been established in
1980 by the embassies of the United States, Canada, Britain,
Australia, and New Zealand. In January 2002 the School moved from
its Lido Hotel premises into a new facility in Shunyi District, in
northeast Beijing. It then ceased to be a diplomatic entity and
became an independent school for foreign children under the auspices
of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission.
Organization: The School is governed by a 12-member Board
of Directors elected by the School’s parent association, which
comprises all parents with children enrolled in the School, which
has oversight of ISB.
Curriculum: The curriculum ISB offers is outcome-based,
drawing from the best resources available internationally. The
grade-level outcomes can be viewed on the school's website at
www.isb.bj.edu.cn/curriculum/outcomes.htm. All curricula are
developed by in-house committees comprised of teachers and
administrators. Basic subject areas include language arts,
mathematics, social science, health, science, technology, physical
education, fine arts, performing arts, foreign language and China
Studies. The School offers a comprehensive ESOL (English for
Speakers of Other Languages) program, as well as limited learning
support for students with mild needs. ISB is accredited by the New
England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and offers the
International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma program to high school
students.
Faculty: In school year 2004-2005, there were 191
full-time and 3 part-time faculty members.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year,
enrollment was 1,785 (PK-grade 5: 670, grades 6-8: 518, and grades
9-12: 597).
Facilities: The School is located in the immediate
vicinity of residential villas such as Capital Paradise, Lomond
Lake, Eurovillage, and River Gardens. The school is envisioned as a
community center for international families in Shunyi District
Beijing. Highlights of the school facility are a 600-seat
professional theater, a 6-lane competition swimming pool, 3
gymnasiums, 2 libraries, 2 cafeterias, 12 science laboratories, and
extensive outdoor sports grounds. The high-tech facility boasts
voice and data ports throughout the building, as well as fiber optic
links that enable teachers and students to access video on demand.
Educational software located on a virtual drive can be accessed by
personal computers throughout the school on an as-needed basis.
Finances: In the 2004-2005 school year, about 95% of the
School’s income derives from regular day school tuition. Annual
rates are as follows: PK (full day): $12,800; Kdg.-grade-5: $15,000;
grades 6-8: $16,100; and grades 9-12: $17,730. The School also
charges the following additional fees: a one-time application fee of
$200; an annual capital levy of $1,200 for PK; $1,500 for Kdg., and
$3,600 for grades 1-12; and a refundable building fee of $15,000 for
Kdg.-grade 12. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
