The International School of Berne
is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an
educational program from pre-kindergarten (age 3) through grade 12
for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1961.
The school year comprises 3 terms extending from August 22 to
December 16, from January 4 to April 7, and from April 24 to June
23.
Organization: The School is governed by a Board of
Directors, composed of up to 9 members elected by the Parents'
Teachers Association. Membership in the Association is automatically
conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the
School.
Curriculum: The School’s curriculum follows the
International Baccalaureate Program. The IB Primary Years Program
and Middle Years Program are currently being introduced in the
School. In grades 11 and 12 the students study for the International
Baccalaureate Diploma. The School’s testing program includes the
International Schools Achievement Tests in grades 3/5/7and 9, the
PSAT’s, and SAT’s. Instruction is in English. German and French are
offered as foreign languages in grades K-12. English as a Second
Language is available for students whose first language is not
English. The School is accredited by the New England Association of
Schools and Colleges, and the Council of International Schools.
Faculty: In the 2005-2006 school year, there are 32
full-time and 8 part-time teachers.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year,
enrollment was 236 (PK-grade 12).
Facilities: Physical facilities are located on a 1-1/2
acre site. Three modern, well-equipped buildings, including two
libraries, a gymnasium, two art rooms, science laboratories,
classrooms, and a learning resource center, comprise the central
facility. A well-organized playground and a sports field are also
provided. The School opened a new building for grades K-5 in August
2001.
Finances: In the 2005-2006 school year, the School's
income derives almost totally from regular day school tuition fees.
Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: $4,924 - $9,147; Kdg.-grade
1: $14,846; grades 2-5: $15,415; grades 6-8: $17,108; and grades
9-12: $19,185. There is an application fee of $193 and a one-time
capital fund fee of $2,694, payable upon entry. There is no busing
service. These fees are payable in Swiss francs. (All fees are
quoted in U.S. dollars.)
