American International School - Chennai
The American International School - Chennai (AISC), founded in 1995, is a non-profit, independent, co-educational day school. It offers a U.S. style educational program from preschool (3+ years) through grade 12 for American and international students who are temporarily resident in India.

Organization: The School is governed by a 7-member Board of Directors. The U.S. Ambassador to India appoints 3 members, one of whom serves as his personal representative and usually is the Chair of the Board. The remaining 4 members are elected from the School Association (made up of the parents and guardians of registered AISC students).

Curriculum: The curriculum follows a college preparatory program and students gain a U.S. High School Diploma upon graduation. Instruction is in English and most study materials are imported from the United States. Class sizes are kept to an average of 12 students, ensuring a high level of individual attention. Learning at AISC occurs through both core and non-core curriculum subjects. All students receive a thorough grounding in the language arts, mathematics, science, social studies and foreign languages (French/Spanish). Computer studies is an integral part of the curriculum from kindergarten through grade 12. In addition there are specialized classes for art, health and physical education, music, library, publications, programming and multimedia (high school), ESL, learning disabilities and Indian Studies. AISC offers the Advanced Placement Program; courses are scheduled to meet the needs of our students on a year-to-year basis. The following AP courses are offered for the 2005-2006 school year: English Literature, U.S. History, Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Economics, French, World History, Computers, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, and Physics. Field trips enhance the learning experience in all subjects and are incorporated into the curriculum wherever possible. AISC is fully accredited by MSA (Middle States Association) and CIS (Council of International Schools) an affiliate of ECIS (European Council of International Schools) and is approved by the Association of Indian Colleges and Universities. It is a member of the European Council for International Schools (ECIS), the Near East and South Asia (NESA) Council of Overseas Schools, the National Association of International Schools (NAIS), the Association for the Advancement of International Education (AAIE), the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and the Overseas Association of College Admission Counseling (OACAC). AISC is also a member of the South Asia Inter-Scholastic Sports Association (SAISA).

AISC offers a full program of After School Activities to students in Grades 1-12. Some examples of extra-curricular activities include sport programs, yoga, modern dance, community service, arts and crafts, band and cultural activities. It participates in SAISA sports competitions with other schools in the region and in Chennai.

Faculty: In the 2005-2006 school year, there are 50 full-time and 2 part-time faculty members, of whom 39 hold advanced degrees. The faculty hails from he United States, Ireland, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, India, Malaysia, and France. The student:teacher ratio is 10:1.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year, enrollment was 303, representing 24 nationalities (PK - Kdg.: 31, grades 1- 5: 119; grades 6-8: 72; grades 9-12: 81).

Facilities: AISC’s campus consists of approximately 180,000 square feet of built-up area, with the balance of space utilized for sports facilities and operational needs. The main classroom wing comprises two floors of spacious classroom and houses the library (containing over 18,000 volumes, ten internet terminals and a selection of seventy periodicals), the health office (staffed by a qualified nurse), the elementary art studio, the computer lab, the English-as-a-Second-Language and special needs suites. Three science labs, two art studios, the foreign languages complex, the music room and the cafeteria, together with the administrative offices are housed in the adjoining building. All classrooms are air-conditioned, with water features and landscaped courtyards further ensuring the entire campus maintains a comfortable temperature throughout the day. The entire campus is laid out to take optimum advantage of the prevailing winds from the Bay of Bengal. Indoor facilities at the air-conditioned Sports Hall include a full-size basketball arena, indoor soccer, badminton and volleyball courts, and a fitness room. Four rooftop tennis courts, an outdoor basketball court, a soccer pitch and running tracks, and a twenty five meter swimming pool complete the sports facilities.

Finances: In the 2005-2006 school year, annual tuition rates are as follows: preschool: $3,350; Kdg.-grade 5:$14,250; grades 6-8: $14,500; grades 9-12: $16,250. In addition, there is an application fee of $135, a one-time non-refundable registration fee of $3,000 for Kdg. through grade 12, and a non-refundable one-time capital fee for all grades of $1,000 per student. The application fee may be paid in Indian Rupees or U.S. dollars. All other fees are to be paid in U.S. dollars. Tuition fees will be refunded on a semester basis only; pro-rated fees will be not be refunded.
