| The American International
School-Riyadh (AIS-R) is an independent, coeducational day school
which offers an educational program from kindergarten I through
grade 12. The School was founded in 1963. The school year comprises
2 semesters extending from August 24 to December 17 and from January
3 to June 8.
Organization: The School is governed by a 7-member Board,
elected for 2-year terms. The right to vote at general membership
meetings is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of
children enrolled in the School. The School is organized in three
divisions: elementary School (Kdg.I-grade 5), middle School (grades
6-8) and high School (grades 9-12).
Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. college
preparatory schools and offers an accredited U.S. High School
Diploma plus the International Baccalaureate Program and Diploma.
Instruction is in English, though English-as-a-Second-Language is
also taught. There is no religious instruction. The School does not
have a comprehensive special education program and, therefore,
cannot accept students who are physically, mentally, or emotionally
challenged to the degree that they cannot be enrolled in a regular
program of study. AIS-R is accredited by the New England Association
of Schools and Colleges and is licensed by the Saudi Arabian
Ministry of Education..
Faculty: In the 2004-2005 school year, there are 76
full-time faculty members.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year,
enrollment was 702 (PK-grade 5: 258; grades 6-8: 168; and grades
9-12: 276).
Facilities: The School operates on one main campus,
constructed in 1977 with major additions in 1980, 1999, 2000 and
2001. Facilities include more than 175 classrooms, 2 cafeterias, a
gymnasium, a theatre, large covered sports areas, 2 libraries with
technology stations, a music building, and rooms for art and drama.
There are 11 science laboratories (6 computerized) and 10 fully
equipped computer laboratories. The School is fully air-conditioned.
Finances: In the 2004-2005 school year, the School’s
income derives from regular day school tuition. The annual tuition
rates range from $6,747 to $12,671. The School also charges a
testing fee of $133, a one-time registration fee of $1,733, and an
ESL/Arabic fee of $800. These fees are payable in Saudi Riyals. (All
fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
