The American International School
in Vienna is an independent, college preparatory, coeducational day
school which offers an educational program from pre-kindergarten
through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School also
offers a post-graduate year. The School was founded in 1959. The
school year comprises two semesters extending from mid-August
through mid-January and from end of January to the beginning of June
2004. Organization: The school is governed by a 13-member
Executive Board, 10 of whom are elected annually by the Parents'
Association which sponsors the School and one is appointed by the
U.S. Ambassador. Membership of the Association is automatically
conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the
school. The School is incorporated under Austrian law and has been
designated as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S.
Internal Revenue Code.
Curriculum: The curriculum is like that of U.S.
college-preparatory private schools. The International Baccalaureate
Diploma is also offered in a demanding two-year study plan. A few
supplementary Advanced Placement courses and the Austrian Matura are
also offered. The School's testing program includes College Board
tests and standardized achievement tests. Instruction is in English.
German is required, and French and Spanish are taught as modern
languages. The School is not staffed or equipped to educate children
with serious learning problems or emotional or behavioral
difficulties. The School is accredited by the Middle States
Association of Colleges and Schools and is recognized by the
Austrian Ministry of Education.
Faculty: In the 2004-2005 school year, there are 98
full-time and 8 part-time faculty members.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year,
enrollment was 709 (PK-grade 5: 293; grades 6-8: 175; grades 9-12 +
PG, 241).
Facilities: Interconnected buildings house the three
school divisions consisting of 66 classrooms, 2 libraries, 7
laboratories, 2 gymnasia, a sports hall, a cafeteria and a theatre.
The total campus has 15 acres. A soccer field, track, and a
elementary playground are among the outdoor facilities.
Finances: For the 2004-2005 school year, about 98 percent
of the school’s income derives from regular day school tuition and
fees. Annual tuition rates were as follows: PK: $8,367; Full day
Kdg.-grade-5: $ 13,076; grades 6-8: $14,530; grades 9-11: $14,663;
grade 12: $14,954. There is an application fee of $153 payable on
first enrollment in the school; and an enrollment fee of $306; a
capital assessment fee for new students of $3,673; and for returning
students, $4,945 an optional bus transportation fee of $626 to $687,
depending on the zone, and a lunch fee of $655 to $742. These fees
are payable in EURO (Î 1.00 = U.S. $0.98). (All the above fees are
